8 EV Charging Myths That Refuse to Die
Half of what new EV owners 'know' about charging arrived secondhand and wrong. The eight most persistent myths, corrected.

Every new EV owner inherits a folk wisdom of charging - some from gas-era intuition, some from 2012-era EV realities that stopped being true, some from pure internet. Here are the eight myths we run into most, each with the correction and the reason.
1. "You can't charge in the rain"
Charging is engineered for weather: no power flows until the connector seals and the car-charger handshake completes, and ground-fault protection cuts power in milliseconds if anything leaks. 2. "Fast charging fries your battery"
The car's battery management throttles, warms and cools the pack to keep every session inside safe limits - that is literally what the taper is. Habitual daily fast charging adds modest extra wear over years; road-trip fast charging is a non-event.
3. "You need a panel upgrade to charge at home"
Many 100-amp-panel homes take a Level 2 circuit fine, and load-managing chargers fit most of the rest without touching the service. A load calculation decides - not a forum rule of thumb.
4. "More amps always means faster charging"
Your car's onboard charger is a hard ceiling; a 48-amp wall unit feeding a 7-kW car charges at 7 kW. Match the charger to the car and bank the savings.
5. "Level 1 is useless"
A wall outlet adds 40-60 miles over a parked night - a real commute's worth. It fails long-range daily drivers and cold climates, not everyone. The honest comparison.
6. "Charging barely beats gas prices"
At average residential rates, home charging runs a fraction of gas per mile - the myth survives by quoting DC fast-charging prices, which genuinely run 2-4x home rates. The garage is the cheap pump; the math is here.
7. "EV chargers cause garage fires"
Listed equipment on a permitted, professionally-installed circuit is boring by design - the circulating fire stories overwhelmingly trace to unlisted hardware, DIY wiring, worn receptacles and extension cords. It is a certification story, not an EV story.
8. "Always charge to 100%"
Gas-tank thinking. Batteries live happiest cycling in the middle; most cars default to an 80-90% daily limit for exactly that reason, with 100% saved for road-trip mornings. Set the limit once and forget the topic.

Is it safe to leave an EV plugged in overnight?
Yes - overnight charging is the designed use case. The car stops drawing at its set limit, the charger and car both monitor faults continuously, and scheduled off-peak charging assumes exactly this. A listed charger on a proper circuit is built to be left alone.
Do EVs lose charge just sitting parked?
A little - typically around 1-2% a day for background systems, more if features like cabin overheat protection or sentry modes run. It is a parking-lot curiosity, not a problem: a parked week costs a fraction of one day's driving range.
Is home charging dangerous for older houses?
Age is not the issue; the circuit is. A licensed electrician's load calculation and a properly permitted circuit make Level 2 charging as safe in a 1960s house as a new build - and the inspection catches the pre-existing wiring problems worth knowing about anyway.
