Which EVs Can Use Tesla Superchargers?

Access is no longer a yes or no. It depends on your port, your automaker, and the stall generation - and a native NACS plug does not always mean the fastest session.

Tesla's Supercharger network stopped being Tesla-only, and the result is a question with three parts rather than one. Whether you can plug in depends on your car's port, on whether your automaker has enabled access for your vehicle, and on which generation of stall you pull into. This page is the access roster. The three gates

  • The port. A native NACS car plugs straight in. A CCS car needs a manufacturer-supplied, vehicle-validated NACS DC adapter - an active device, not the passive AC adapters used at home.
  • The automaker. Access is switched on brand by brand, usually alongside an adapter program and an app update. A car with the right plug still needs its maker to have turned the network on for it.
  • The stall. Not every Supercharger opens to non-Teslas. Access is tied to the newer generations - V3 hardware from 2019 onward, and V4 - rather than the whole historic network.

Magic Dock: the stalls with the adapter built in

A subset of Superchargers carry a Magic Dock - a CCS adapter built into the stall itself, so a CCS car can charge without carrying anything. Where they exist they are the easiest path, and they predate most of the brand programs. They are not everywhere, and they are not a substitute for knowing your own car's adapter situation before a trip.

The part that matters more than access: how fast

Getting a plug into the car is not the same as getting a fast session out of it, and this is where the celebratory coverage stops short. Hyundai and Kia's E-GMP cars run an 800-voltpack. Tesla's V3 Supercharger hardware was designed around roughly 400 volts. So a native-NACS Ioniq 5 - the car with the fewest barriers to plugging in - has been reported charging slower at a V3 Supercharger than the same car charging on CCS through an adapter: roughly 30 minutes for 10 to 80 percent against about 20 minuteson CCS at a 257 kW peak. Tesla's V4 cabinet hardware lifts that ceiling, but the stall you actually pull into decides your result.

Keep it in proportion. Supercharger access is a road-trip convenience. The overwhelming majority of charging happens overnight at home, at a fraction of the price - see home vs public charging cost. Access is worth having; it is not worth choosing a car or a home charger around.

Before you rely on it

Check your automaker's charging page for your specific VIN, get the adapter in the car before the trip rather than during it, and plan with the Tesla app or your car's navigation so you land on stalls that are actually open to you. Can any EV use a Tesla Supercharger now?

No. It depends on your car's port, whether your automaker has enabled access for your vehicle, and the stall generation - access is tied to newer V3 and V4 hardware rather than the whole network. Cars on the CHAdeMO standard have no path at all.

Do I need an adapter to Supercharge a non-Tesla?

Only if your car has a CCS port, and it must be the manufacturer's vehicle-validated NACS DC adapter. Native-NACS cars plug in directly. The cheap passive adapters used for home charging are AC-only and will not work.

Is a Supercharger always the fastest option for my EV?

No. An 800-volt car such as an Ioniq 5 or EV6 has been reported charging faster on a high-power CCS charger than on a 400-volt V3 Supercharger stall - about 20 minutes versus 30 for 10-80 percent. Newer V4 hardware narrows that gap.

What is a Magic Dock?

A Supercharger stall with a CCS adapter built into the cable, so a CCS car can charge without carrying its own adapter. They exist at a subset of sites rather than network-wide.
