Should You Charge Your EV to 100 Percent?
The common advice is 'charge to 80% daily.' Here is where that comes from, when full is perfectly fine, and the battery chemistry that flips the rule.

The short version: for most EVs, charging to around 80-90% for daily use and saving 100% for the days you need the range is a gentle habit that helps the battery age a little slower - but it is a nudge, not a rule you must obey. And if your car has an LFP battery, the advice flips: the manufacturer usually wants you to charge to 100% regularly. Here is the whole picture without the anxiety.
Where the 80% advice comes from
Lithium-ion batteries experience the most chemical stress when they sit at very high states of charge, especially when warm. Keeping the daily charge ceiling a bit lower - 80 or 90% - reduces the time the pack spends in that high-stress zone, which modestly slows the capacity fade that happens over years. It is the same logic behind not fast-charging to 100% on a hot battery, and it is why many EVs let you set a daily charge limit in the app or on the screen.
How much does it actually matter?
Honestly, less than the internet implies. The effect is real but gradual - a habit that pays off in slightly better capacity retention over many years, not a switch between a healthy and a ruined battery. Real-world data shows EV batteries hold up well across a range of charging habits, and the car's battery-management system already protects the pack. Treat the 80% guideline as easy, free insurance, not a source of stress: if you occasionally forget and charge to 100%, nothing bad happens.
A simple rule of thumb for most EVs: set the daily limit to 80-90%, and charge to 100% only before a long drive - and time that full charge to finish near your departure so the battery does not sit full for hours.
When charging to 100% is perfectly fine
- Before a road trip or a long day, when you genuinely need the range. That is what the top of the battery is for.
- Occasionally, to let the car recalibrate its range estimate - many EVs use a full charge to rebalance cells and refine the guess-o-meter.
- If you drive right after charging, so the pack does not sit at 100% for a long period. Sitting full is the part that matters, more than briefly reaching full.
The exception: LFP batteries
There is one important exception. Many newer EVs (and many standard-range trims) use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, and for these the manufacturers generally recommend charging to 100% regularly - often at least weekly. LFP chemistry tolerates a full charge better, and a periodic 100% charge is actually needed for the battery-management system to read the state of charge accurately. If your car has an LFP pack (check the manual or manufacturer guidance), follow their advice and charge full - the 80% rule does not apply to you.

For a typical (non-LFP) EV, set your daily charge limit to 80-90%, charge to 100% when you need the range, and do not agonize about the occasional full charge.
