Installing an EV Charger in a Detached Garage

The charger is the same; the wiring is not. A detached garage means a buried or overhead feeder, voltage-drop math on a long run, and often a small subpanel at the far end.

Putting an EV charger in a detached garage is completely normal - it just adds three things a garage attached to the house does not have: distance, a feeder that has to cross open ground, and usually a small subpanel at the garage end. None of that is exotic, but all of it is a licensed electrician's work, and the distance is what mostly sets the price. Here is what actually differs from a garage-on-the-house install.

The distance is the whole story

An attached garage often sits a few feet from the main panel; a detached garage can be 40, 80, or 150 feet away. Two things follow from that. First, you are paying for a lot more conductor. Second, over a long run the voltage sags - the further electricity travels down a wire, the more of it is lost as heat, and the code limits how much drop is acceptable. To keep the voltage at the charger within spec, the electrician often has to upsize the conductor beyond what the amperage alone would require. Because the run is long and the conductor is large, this is the classic case where aluminum wire starts to pay off: upsized aluminum can be meaningfully cheaper than copper over 80-plus feet, provided it is terminated as aluminum. Your electrician weighs that against your run length.

Buried or overhead: the feeder to the garage

The circuit that reaches a detached garage is a feeder, and it gets there one of two ways. Underground is the common choice: conductors in conduit, trenched to code depth, which is tidy and protected but means digging. Overhead is the alternative where a trench is impractical, run as an approved aerial cable between the house and garage. Trenching is often the biggest single line item on a detached-garage job because it is labor and sometimes machine time, not just wire. Either way the feeder, its depth or height, and its protection are all code-governed and inspected.

Why a subpanel usually makes sense

On a detached garage it is often cleaner to run one feeder out to a small subpanel mounted in the garage, then land the charger's short circuit right there, rather than running the full charger circuit all the way from the house. The subpanel also leaves room for garage lights, an outlet, or a second charger later without another long trench. Remember the key limit, though: a subpanel adds breaker spaces and a local distribution point, not service capacity - your main service amperage still governs whether the charger fits. Pick a charger that suits a permanent, exposed spot

A detached garage is often unheated and more exposed, so the charger choice leans toward a rugged, weather-rated, hardwired unit you install once and leave.
