Do You Need a Surge Protector for an EV Charger?
A charger is expensive electronics on a big circuit. Here is what its built-in protection actually covers, and the one protective layer worth adding.

You do not strictly need a dedicated surge protector to charge your car, but for a hardwired charger a whole-home surge protective device is a cheap, sensible layer that protects a fair amount of connected equipment at once - your charger included. What you should never do is reach for a household power strip surge protector on a 240-volt, 50-amp EV circuit. This guide separates the protection your charger already has from the kind worth adding, and flags the option that is genuinely dangerous.
What a surge is, and why a charger is exposed
A surge is a brief, sharp spike in voltage - from a nearby lightning strike, utility switching, or large loads cycling on the grid. An EV charger is electronics wired onto a high-current circuit, mounted where it is often exposed to an outdoor or garage environment, so it sits in the path of exactly those events. A big enough surge can damage the charger's control board the same way it damages a TV or a computer. That is the risk we are managing.
What the charger already protects against - and what it does not
Most quality Level 2 chargers include internal protection: over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature cut-offs, plus the built-in ground-fault protection the NEC requires for EV equipment under Article 625. The Grizzl-E Ultimate, for example, carries built-in GFCI plus over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature protection. That is real and worth having.
But those features protect the charger from faults and modest excursions; they are not the same as whole-home surge suppression, and they say nothing about protecting the rest of your house. A large transient can still overwhelm point protection, and other equipment on the panel gets no benefit from the charger's internal cut-offs at all. The recommended layer: a whole-home SPD
For a hardwired charger, the sensible upgrade is a whole-home surge protective device (SPD) - a Type 1 unit installed ahead of the main or a Type 2 unit installed at the panel by an electrician. It clamps large transients before they reach any branch circuit, so one device protects the charger and the rest of your home's electronics together. It is a modest add-on when an electrician is already at the panel for the charger circuit, which makes the charger install the natural time to add it. Plug-in chargers: the limitation to know
If your charger plugs into a NEMA 14-50 outlet, dedicated point-of-use surge protection at that receptacle is limited - there is no common, properly rated 240-volt / 50-amp surge outlet equivalent to the strips you use on a desk. That pushes the practical answer back to the panel: a whole-home SPD protects a plug-in charger just as well, because it sits upstream of the 14-50 circuit. Treat the panel-level device as the primary protection for either install type.
Never plug an EV charger, or its 240V cordset, into a household power-strip surge protector. Those strips are rated for 120-volt, 15-amp loads - nowhere near the continuous 240-volt, 40-amp draw of EV charging - and using one is a serious fire and shock hazard. Surge protection on an EV circuit means a panel-mounted SPD installed by a licensed electrician, never a plug-in strip.
The warranty and value angle
A charger is a lasting investment on a costly install, so protecting it is reasonable - and some manufacturers reference surge or transient damage in their warranty terms, so an installed SPD can also help preserve coverage. The honest framing: a whole-home SPD is not mandatory, but it is inexpensive insurance that guards far more than the charger, and the charger install is the ideal moment to add it. A cheap power strip is not an alternative - it is a hazard. Read the fine print on your specific unit, and ask your electrician about a Type 2 SPD while the panel is open.
