GMC Hummer EV: Home Charging Time and Cost

The one EV where a standard 48-amp charger is genuinely a bottleneck. Here is what 19.2 kW charging actually requires.

The GMC Hummer EV is the exception that proves the rule. Almost every EV tops out at 48 amps of home charging, but the Hummer's onboard charger accepts up to 19.2 kW - about 80 amps - and on its enormous ~200 kWh (Edition 1) battery, that extra speed genuinely earns its keep. It is the one car where a standard 48-amp charger is a real bottleneck.

Why 48 amps is not enough here

At the usual 48 amps (11.5 kW), the Hummer's huge pack takes the better part of a full day to refill from low - fine if you plug in nightly and never run it down, slow if you don't. To use the full 19.2 kW you need an 80-amp charger on a 100-amp circuit, which is a serious electrical install and, on many panels, a panel-capacity question. That cuts a low-to-full charge to roughly 11 hours - still an overnight job, just one that actually fits.

What most owners actually do

Two honest paths. If you drive it hard and drain the pack, spring for the 80-amp circuit and a charger that supports 19.2 kW - the Hummer is the one EV that rewards it. If you top up nightly from a partial charge, a normal 48-amp charger keeps up fine and costs far less to install. Use our amperage guide to decide. How many amps does a GMC Hummer EV need at home?

The Hummer accepts up to 19.2 kW - about 80 amps - which needs an 80-amp charger on a 100-amp circuit. That is unusual; almost every other EV caps at 48 amps. A standard 48-amp charger still works, just slower on the Hummer's very large battery.
