Buy the Grizzl-E Ultimate if you want the full 48 amps, a permanent hardwired install, and the most weatherproof shell Grizzl-E makes - it is the one for a fast, tough, outdoor-ready fixture. Buy the Grizzl-E Classic if 40 amps is plenty (it is for most cars), you want the simplicity and flexibility of a plug-in NEMA 14-50 unit, and you would rather spend less. Both are the same cast-aluminum tank; the difference is speed, install method, and how far you push the weather rating.

Speed

The Ultimate wins outright, if your setup can use it. It is a dedicated 48-amp / 11.5 kW unit, adjustable down to 16 amps, built for the full speed. The Classic is 40 amps / 9.6 kW. That gap only materializes when the Ultimate is hardwired to a 60-amp circuit (48 x 1.25, because charging is a continuous load) and your car's onboard charger actually accepts 11.5 kW. Install: plug-in vs hardwired

This is the real dividing line. The Classic is a plug-in unit with a NEMA 14-50 plug - if a rated outlet exists, you mount it and plug in, no electrician for the charger itself, and you can unplug and take it with you. The Ultimate is hardwired only- there is no plug-in version - so it is a permanent fixture a licensed electrician wires to a dedicated circuit. If you rent, might move, or already have a 14-50, the Classic's plug-in nature is a genuine advantage; if you want a clean permanent install and the full 48 amps, hardwiring the Ultimate is the point. Smart features

Neither is the one to buy for software. Both are deliberately "dumb" - no scheduling app, no energy monitoring - which is exactly what a lot of buyers want in a charger. How to choose between them

Can you (and your car) actually use 48 amps?

The Ultimate's speed advantage exists only when it is hardwired to a 60-amp circuit and your car's onboard charger accepts 11.5 kW. If your panel cannot support a 60-amp circuit, or your car caps AC at 40 amps or less, the Ultimate charges no faster than the Classic - so the decision collapses to install method and weather rating. Check your car's onboard limit first.

Do you want plug-in flexibility or a permanent fixture?

The Classic plugs into a NEMA 14-50 and can be unplugged and moved; the Ultimate is hardwired and permanent. Renters and likely movers lean Classic; owners settling in who want a clean, secure install lean Ultimate. If you already have a rated 14-50 outlet, the Classic saves you the hardwire step entirely.

How harsh is the location?

Both survive outdoors, but the Ultimate's IP67 / NEMA 4X rating and built-in GFCI suit a fully exposed, coastal, or extreme-weather spot. For a sheltered garage or a covered exterior wall, the Classic's cast-aluminum build is already far tougher than most chargers, and the extra rating is not essential.
