Rivian R1T & R1S: Home Charging Time and Cost
Rivian's batteries are among the biggest on the road, so home charging speed matters more here than on almost any other EV. Here is the time, the cost, and the charger to use.

A Rivian R1T or R1S accepts up to 11.5 kW (48 amps) on AC - a normal ceiling - but the batteries are anything but normal: roughly 106 kWh (Standard), 135 kWh (Large), and up to ~180 kWh (Max). Because there is so much energy to move, a full 48-amp charger matters more here than on almost any other EV.
How long it takes
At 48 amps the R1T/R1S adds roughly 25 to 30 miles of range per hour. On the big packs a full charge is genuinely an overnight-plus affair, which is exactly why you want the fastest home charging the car will accept.
At 48 amps / 11.5 kW, 10 to 80 percent:
- Standard pack (~106 kWh): about 6.5 hours
- Large pack (~135 kWh): about 8 hours
- Max pack (~180 kWh): about 11 hours - a 40-amp charger would push this past a single night

- More per charge than a small EV only because the pack is huge - per mile it is still pennies

Connector and charger
The port depends on the model year. A 2022-2025 R1T or R1S has a CCS1 port that takes a J1772 plug directly, so any J1772 Level 2 charger works - the 48-amp units are the ones worth buying given the pack size. From model year 2026 Rivian ships a native NACS port instead: the same J1772 chargers still do the job, you just add a J1772-to-NACS adapter. Rivian also sells its own wall charger and its own adapter. Either way the cost math above is unchanged - the plug shape does not alter a kilowatt-hour.

Does the Rivian need a 48-amp charger?
It accepts up to 48 amps (11.5 kW), and because the packs are so large - up to ~180 kWh on the Max - a 48-amp charger is genuinely worth it here, more than on a small-battery EV. A 40-amp unit works but adds hours on the big packs.
How much does it cost to charge a Rivian at home?
About $17 for a Large-pack 10-to-80-percent top-up and roughly $22 for the Max pack at the US average rate. It costs more per charge only because the battery holds far more energy; per mile it is still a few cents. Use the calculator above for your rate.
