Does My Rivian Need a Charging Adapter?
It hangs on one number, and half the internet has it wrong: 2022-2025 Rivians have a CCS port, model year 2026 and later have NACS. That single fact decides which adapter you buy.

Rivian puts the change at model year 2026: vehicles from 2022 to 2025 have a CCS charge port, and model year 2026 and later use a NACS charge port. That is Rivian's own wording, and it matters because a great deal of secondary coverage says 2025 - which would send every 2025 R1T and R1S owner to buy an adapter they do not need. Get the year right and the rest is easy.

2026 and newer R1T / R1S: NACS port. A J1772-to-NACS AC adapter lets you use a J1772 home charger; a CCS adapter opens the CCS fast-charging network.
Why the year gets misreported
Rivian announced its NACS intentions well before the hardware shipped, and a lot of articles dated the port change to the announcement rather than the build. Rivian's own support documentation is unambiguous, and its accessory listings agree: the Rivian J1772 AC adapter and the NACS wall charger are both listed as compatible with 2026+ Rivian vehicles. If you own a 2025 truck, you have a CCS port. Confirm it the reliable way with the thirty-second port check rather than trusting a model-year table on a forum - including ours.
At home: same charger, different dongle
A Rivian accepts the full 48 amps, which is unusual and genuinely worth buying for - most EVs cap lower. So the home decision is about amperage and the circuit, not the connector. A 2022-2025 CCS Rivian reaches Tesla Superchargers with a Rivian NACS DC adapter. A 2026+ NACS Rivian plugs into a Supercharger natively and instead wants a CCS adapter for the non-Tesla fast-charging networks. Can I use my Rivian NACS DC adapter at home?
No. That adapter is for DC fast charging. Home Level 2 is AC, and it needs a J1772-to-NACS AC adapter on a NACS-port truck, or no adapter at all on a CCS truck.
