Do All EVs Use the Same Charger?

For home charging, almost. There are only two AC plug shapes - J1772 and NACS - and a passive adapter bridges them, so a single Level 2 charger can serve any EV in the driveway.

For home charging, the answer is close to yes - and that surprises people who assume every brand has its own proprietary plug like phone chargers used to. For AC charging (the only kind you do at home), there are just two connector shapes in North America: J1772 and NACS. A single Level 2 charger, plus at most a cheap passive adapter, can charge essentially any EV. Here is the full picture, including the one place it is genuinely not universal.

Two plug shapes, not twenty

Nearly every non-Tesla EV sold through 2024 uses the J1772 connector for Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging. Teslas - and, starting around 2025, a growing list of other brands - use NACS (the Tesla-style plug, now standardized as SAE J3400). That is the entire AC landscape: two shapes. They carry the same power at the same amperage; only the connector geometry differs. A passive adapter bridges the two

Because J1772 and NACS carry identical AC power, a simple passive adapter converts between them - no electronics, no compatibility risk, just a change of plug shape. A J1772 car can charge from a NACS (Tesla-style) charger with a NACS-to-J1772 adapter like the Lectron or EVDANCE, and a NACS-port car can use a J1772 charger with a J1772-to-NACS adapter. Buy a J1772 charger and you are covered

The practical upshot for a home buyer: a standard J1772 Level 2 charger is the safe, universal choice. It charges any J1772 car directly and any NACS/Tesla car through the adapter it likely already came with. The one place it is not universal: DC fast charging

The "same charger" rule is about AC home charging. At public DC fast chargers the picture is a little more involved - a passive AC adapter does not unlock DC Supercharging, and CCS-versus-NACS DC compatibility depends on the car and the station. So: not literally one identical charger for every car, but close enough that it does not matter at home. Buy a J1772 Level 2 charger, keep the right adapter if you have a mixed household, and one unit serves the driveway.
