About The Charge Curve

An independent, reader-funded guide to charging an electric car at home - built on published specs, honest arithmetic, and live prices, not a fake test lab.

What this site is

The Charge Curve reviews home EV charging equipment - Level 2 chargers, NACS and J1772 adapters, portable EVSE - and explains the things you need to know before you buy: what a charge costs, what breaker a charger needs, and how fast EVs really charge. Everything is organized around one idea: give you the number and the reasoning, not a marketing adjective.

We are funded by the Amazon Associates program. When you buy through one of our links we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, and that is the entire business model - no brand pays us for placement, no manufacturer sends us hardware, and commissions never change a ranking. The full details are in our affiliate disclosure. The Charge Curve is published by Type 5 Marketing LLC.

Who writes it

The Charge Curve is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who is genuinely into how EV charging works. Not a licensed electrician, not an engineer, not a "long-time expert" - just someone who reads the manuals, compiles the published specs, and does the math, and shows the work so you can check it. No lab coat, no sponsored placements.

That framing is deliberate and honest. The rest of this field competes on credentialed testers and physical labs, and much of it exaggerates. We do not have a lab, so we do not pretend to - and we turn that into the point of difference. What we can genuinely offer is a published, reproducible method built on manufacturer spec sheets, safety listings, electrical-code math, and cited electricity data. If you can follow the arithmetic, you can check us.

What this site is not

  • Not a testing lab. We have not bench-tested the chargers we cover, and we say so on every page. Our scores are judgments from documented research against a published rubric, never bench measurements.
  • Not a source of fake reviews. We do not invent testimonials, star ratings, or owner quotes. Where we cite aggregated owner sentiment, it is described as exactly that.
  • Not for sale. No manufacturer can buy a ranking, a score, or a kind word. The cheaper product wins whenever it is the better buy.
  • Not electrical advice. Anything touching your panel or wiring is described as standard practice to confirm with a licensed electrician and your local code - never as instructions to do it yourself.

How we make money and why it does not bias us

Affiliate commissions only work long term if the recommendations are trustworthy, so our incentive is aligned with yours: help you buy the right thing once. That is why you will find "don't buy this if" notes on every product, honest "skip this one" calls, and cheaper picks ranked above pricier ones. Read the editorial policy for the rules we hold ourselves to, and the methodology for exactly how the picks are made.
