The rule that makes 48 amps different: a 60-amp circuit and a hardwire
EV charging is a continuous load, so by code the circuit is sized to 125 percent of the charger's current. That single rule is what separates 48 amps from the 40-amp default most homes settle for:
- A 40-amp charger needs a 50-amp breaker (40 x 1.25 = 50) and typically 6 AWG copper - and it can be a plug-in unit on a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
- A 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp breaker (48 x 1.25 = 60) and 6 AWG copper, often heavier 4 AWG on a long run - and it has to be hardwired.
The hardwire is not optional. A NEMA 14-50 plug lives on a 50-amp circuit, and the continuous-load rule caps a plug-in charger at 40 amps of draw. To pull the full 48 amps you have to wire the charger straight into a 60-amp circuit with no plug in between - which is exactly why every unit on this page is hardwired (the ChargePoint and Emporia sell a plug-in variant too, but plug-in they are 40-amp chargers, not 48). The catch nobody mentions: your car may not accept 48 amps
The charger is only half the equation. The other half is your car's onboard AC charger - the component inside the vehicle that converts the 240-volt AC from a home charger into DC for the battery. It has its own ceiling, and it is frequently lower than 48 amps. Many EVs cap their onboard charger at 32 amps (7.7 kW) or 40 amps (9.6 kW); only vehicles with an 11.5 kW or larger onboard charger will ever pull the full 48. Buy a 48-amp charger, wire it to a 60-amp circuit, and plug in a car that accepts 40 amps, and it charges at 40 - the charger cannot push more than the car will take.
So before you spend on 48 amps, check your car's onboard AC charging rate in the owner's manual or spec sheet. If it is 11.5 kW or higher, a 48-amp charger pays off. If it is 7.7 or 9.6 kW, a 40-amp charger reaches your car's ceiling for less money and less wiring - and the difference on a two-car driveway is that a future EV with a bigger onboard charger could still use the headroom. The one case where buying 48 amps you cannot use today is defensible is future-proofing: the circuit and the charger outlast the car, and the next EV may accept more.
What 48 amps actually buys you in speed
The jump from 40 to 48 amps is a 20 percent increase in power - 9.6 kW to 11.5 kW. On a car that can use it, that is roughly the difference between adding about 30 miles of range an hour and about 40. Over a normal overnight charge nobody is range-anxious about the gap; both fill an empty battery by morning. Where 48 amps earns its keep is a short top-up window: a driver who plugs in for two or three hours after a long day, or a household sharing one car between two drivers, gets meaningfully more range back in the same time.
