Amps to kW: what the speed numbers mean

At 240 volts, 48 amps is about 11.5 kW and 40 amps about 9.6 kW - a real but modest gap, roughly 40 versus 30-some miles of range per hour depending on the car. Because charging is a continuous load, 48 amps needs a 60-amp breaker and 40 amps needs a 50-amp breaker. The Emporia only reaches 48 amps hardwired; go plug-in and it, like the Grizzl-E, tops out at 40.

Smart vs deliberately dumb

A smart charger earns its keep on a time-of-use rate, where automatic scheduling moves charging to cheap off-peak hours, and in a two-car home, where load management lets units share one circuit safely. On a flat rate with a single car, a dumb charger like the Grizzl-E does the identical core job with nothing to fail. Decide whether you will actually use the software before you pay for it - though with the Emporia, you barely pay extra either way.

Certification and weather

Both are safe choices here: the Grizzl-E is UL certified with a cast-aluminum outdoor-rated shell, and the Emporia is a listed unit as well.
