Hyundai Ioniq 5/6 & Kia EV6/EV9: Home Charging Time and Cost
These E-GMP cars are the fastest DC chargers on the market - but at home they charge like any other 48-amp EV. Here is why, and what it costs.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5/6 and Kia EV6/EV9 are famous for one thing: 800-volt architecturethat can add 10 to 80 percent in about 18 minutes on a 350 kW DC fast charger. At home, that speed does not apply - their onboard AC charger is a normal ~10.9 to 11 kW (48 amps), like most EVs. Fast DC and home AC are two different systems; do not buy a bigger home charger expecting road-trip speeds.
How long it takes at home
At ~48 amps, an Ioniq 5 or EV6 (~77 to 84 kWh) does 10 to 80 percent in about 5 hours; the larger EV9 (~99 kWh) takes about 6.5. All add roughly 30 miles of range per hour - plenty for overnight charging.

Connector and charger
These cars use a J1772 port today (Hyundai and Kia are moving to NACS on newer model years), so any J1772 Level 2 charger fits - see the best Level 2 chargers. A 48-amp unit gets you the car's full home speed; there is no benefit to going bigger. Add a NACS-to-J1772 adapter to use Tesla-style chargers.

If it charges in 18 minutes, why is home charging slow?
That 18-minute figure is DC fast charging on an 800-volt public charger - a completely separate system from the AC charger in your garage. At home the car is limited by its onboard AC charger (~11 kW / 48 amps), like almost every EV. Home charging is slower by design and that is fine, because you do it overnight.
Do I need a special charger for an 800V Hyundai or Kia?
No. Any standard J1772 Level 2 charger works, and a 48-amp unit gives you the car's full home charging speed. The 800V system only matters at DC fast-charging stations, not at home.
