Can I Charge My EV in the Rain?
Short answer: yes, safely. EV charging is built for weather from the ground up - here is exactly why.

It is one of the most common worries from new EV owners, and a completely fair one: you are plugging a high-power electrical connection into a car, outside, in the rain. Is that safe? Yes - and not by luck. EV charging was designed to be weatherproof from day one, and understanding how puts the worry to rest.
Why it is safe by design
Charging outdoors in the rain is safe because the whole system is engineered for it - the same way gas pumps are built to be used outdoors. Several layers do the work:
- No power until the connection is sealed.An EV charger does not send high-voltage power the instant you touch the plug to the port. The car and charger first "handshake" over low-voltage signals to confirm a proper, complete connection - only then does real power flow. An open, wet plug sitting in your hand is not energized.
- Weather-sealed connectors.The J1772 and NACS connectors, and the car's charge port, are designed so the current-carrying pins are shrouded and sealed when mated. Rain hits the outside, not the live contacts.
- Ground-fault protection. Chargers include ground-fault detection that cuts power in milliseconds if it senses current going anywhere it should not - the same protection as the outlet by your bathroom sink, sized for charging.
- Outdoor-rated equipment. Home chargers carry weather ratings (an outdoor NEMA enclosure rating) and safety listings precisely so they can live on an exterior wall through rain, snow and heat.
Public fast chargers sit outdoors in every climate and run in downpours all day; home charging in the rain is the same principle at lower power.
The few things worth doing anyway
Safe by design does not mean careless. A short, sensible checklist:
- Use outdoor-rated gear for outdoor installs. If your charger lives outside, buy one built for it - see our best outdoor chargers. Do not mount an indoor-only unit on an exterior wall.
- Do not submerge the connector. Weatherproof is not the same as underwater. Do not let the plug sit in a standing puddle, and do not charge in genuine flooding.
- Keep connectors clean and off the ground. Hang the plug in its holster rather than leaving it in dirt or slush, so the contacts stay clean and dry between uses.
- Skip the extension cord.Wet conditions are exactly where a cord's extra connections are riskiest - see our extension cord guide.
The one real exception is damage: never use a charger with a cracked connector, frayed cable, or broken housing, wet or dry. Compromised equipment is the actual hazard - not the weather. Inspect gear occasionally and replace anything damaged.
Bottom line: plug in and charge in the rain or snow without a second thought, as long as your equipment is outdoor-rated and undamaged. The engineering has your back.
