How to Reset an EV Charger

A clean power-cycle fixes a surprising share of charger glitches. Here is how to do it safely for plug-in and hardwired units - and the one repeating fault where resetting is exactly the wrong move.

Resetting a charger is the EV equivalent of turning it off and on again, and it works for the same reason it works on a phone or a router: a clean power-cycle clears a stuck internal state and lets the unit start fresh. A surprising number of charging glitches - a session that will not begin, a communication error with the car, a smart unit that will not finish its Wi-Fi setup - clear with nothing more than this. This guide covers how to reset safely for both plug-in and hardwired units, what the different levels of reset do, and the single situation where resetting is precisely the wrong thing to do.

Always start by unplugging the car

Before you touch the charger itself, end the session and unplug the connector from the car. This stops current flow cleanly, lets the charger and vehicle drop their handshake, and means you are power-cycling a unit that is no longer under load. It is the simplest and safest first move, and occasionally it is the whole fix on its own - reconnecting the car after a clean disconnect re-runs the handshake and clears a stuck communication state without any further steps.

Resetting a plug-in charger

A hardwired charger has no plug to pull, so the reset is done at the panel: find the dedicated breaker for the charger, switch it fully off, wait about thirty seconds, and switch it back on. Because the charger is on its own dedicated circuit, this affects nothing else in the house. The factory reset is the one to use deliberately. It clears the unit's stored Wi-Fi credentials and app pairing and returns it to its out-of-box state, which is exactly what you want when a smart charger will not finish joining your network or you are selling the house - but it also means re-doing the whole app setup afterward. When a reset is the right tool

Reach for a reset when the symptom looks like a software hiccup rather than a physical fault: a unit frozen on one status, a communication error where the car and charger will not shake hands, or a smart charger stuck partway through Wi-Fi pairing.
