How Fast Will My EV Charge at Home?

Three numbers decide it, and the smallest one wins. The math that predicts your charge time before you buy anything.

Every home-charging speed question reduces to three numbers, and the rule that the lowest limit wins. One: what the charger can deliver (its amps × 240V). Two: what your car's onboard charger accepts — the ceiling no wall charger can exceed. Three: how big the battery is. Charger vs car sets the power; battery size turns power into hours.

The two-step math

Step one — find your real power. Take the smaller of charger output and car limit. A 48-amp charger (11.5 kW) feeding a car that accepts 11.5 kW: 11.5 kW. The same charger feeding a 7.2 kW car: 7.2 kW — the extra capability simply idles (why over-buying wastes money).

Step two — divide the energy you need. Charging from 20% to 80% on an 82 kWh battery means adding ~49 kWh. At 11.5 kW: about 4.5 hours. At 7.2 kW: about 7. Real-world losses add roughly 10%, and the last 10-15% of a full charge trickles slower by design — which is why overnight windows make almost every combination workable.

Rules of thumb that survive contact

  • Miles per hour of charging: a 48A charger adds roughly 25-35 miles of range per hour on most EVs; 32A adds ~20-25; a wall outlet (Level 1) adds 3-5.
  • The overnight test: 10-12 parked hours × your charging rate must comfortably exceed daily miles driven. For nearly everyone, even 32A passes with room to spare.
  • Cold weather taxes it: expect slower effective charging in a freezing garage — budget margin, not precision.

Why doesn't a bigger charger charge my car faster?
Because the car's onboard charger is a hard ceiling — it converts the AC to DC, and it converts at its rated speed no matter what the wall offers. A 48A charger on a 7.2 kW car charges at 7.2 kW, full stop. Match the charger to the car's limit and spend the difference on the install or better equipment elsewhere.
How many miles per hour does Level 2 charging add?
Roughly 20-35 miles of range per hour depending on the amperage and the vehicle's efficiency — a thrifty sedan gains more miles from the same kilowatts than a heavy truck. At any point in that range, a normal overnight covers a normal commute several times over.
How long does a full 0-100% charge take?
Longer than the math suggests — the final 10-15% deliberately slows to protect the battery — but it's also the wrong question: daily charging is top-ups, not empty-to-full, and most owners charge to 80-90% for battery health. Compute your real daily need (miles driven ÷ miles-per-hour added) and the answer is usually 'a couple of hours a night.'
